The Social and Epistemic Significance of ‘Fake News’ in Cambodia

Fresh media is a popular Khmer-language online information outlet which has emerged in support of Cambodia’s shift to hegemonic authoritarianism. Its emergence offers paralleled a government attack on compartments of independent media that enact the liberal democratic project. Fresh News has a particular sway in articulating, legitimizing, and seeking to craft support for the regime’s new notion of democracy, promoting an ongoing judicialization of mega-politics, and distributing a discourse of ‘fake news’ that tries to promote an epistemic shift.

On this page, I use an inductive method of analyse the transcripts of formal selection interviews conducted along with the attendees of a day hub and their experiences with reports. Attendants see the ‘news’ they show to one another as part of their personal information when older folks, and this plays a part in a sense of belonging inside their home life circumstance.
